SURVEY ON DISABILITY IN HUNZA VALLEY

Karakoram Area Development Organization (KADO) with the financial assistance of The World Bank conducted the door to door Survey on Disability in Hunza Valley. The survey was carried out in entire Hunza Valley from September 21 to October 21, 2004. The major objective of this Survey  was to collect baseline information about Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), facilities and services related to PWDs, human resource related to PWDs, State of PWDs, and Basic Minimum Needs (BMN) of the PWDs, and to provide situational analysis on disability in Hunza Valley, which will serve for the preparation of KADO’s technical cooperation project on rehabilitation training including Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) activity and help towards developing a rehabilitation strategy.

The Karakoram Area Development Organization surveyor’s team interviewed approximately 5,795 households in all the three regions of Hunza, namely Upper Hunza, Central Hunza and Lower Hunza accounting to 97% coverage.

According to the survey findings, 18% of the total households show disability of either kind. Seventy six percent are illiterate, whereas 11% have primary education. Out of the total population of the PWDs in the focus area, 73% are unemployed hence dependent upon their parents/ guardians or kin, whereas 67% have no source of personal income.
